Target Participants
Volunteers who are working with people with intellectual disabilities in voluntary welfare organisation (VWOs)
Learning Objective
Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:
1) Explain the nature and causes of intellectual disabilities
2) Identify the persistent myths about intellectual disabilities
3) Demonstrate the knowledge of instructional methods in training and interacting with people with intellectual disabilities, in areas of self-maintenance, productivity and recreational living skills
Course Outline
1) What is intellectual disability?
2) What are the causes, myths and nature of intellectual disability?
3) Understanding the various classifications and developmental stages of intellectual disability
4) Current challenges and difficulties faced by people with intellectual disabilities
5) Training models to be used with people with intellectual disabilities
6) Do’s and don’ts in working with people with intellectual disabilities
7) Do’s and don’ts in promoting the socially valued role of people with intellectual disabilities
Trainer
Ms Linda Prebhash is the vice principal with Rainbow Centre Margaret Drive School. She has been in the special education arena for the past 18 years. She has worked as a teacher, a senior teacher and principal in her career. Ms Prebhash also serves on the executive board of Special Olympics Singapore, as a volunteer overseeing sports, activities and competitions for the intellectually disabled, for the past 16 years. In both her capacities, she works with individual volunteers and corporate volunteers at various levels. As a volunteer herself, she can relate to what volunteers look out for.
